What is GeM Portal?

The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal is an online platform created by the Government of India for public procurement of goods and services. It was launched on August 9, 2016, by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to make buying and selling for government departments more transparent, efficient, and fast.

GeM is a paperless, cashless, and contactless system that helps central and state government offices, public sector units (PSUs), and local bodies buy common items like office supplies, vehicles, and services such as transportation or consulting.

The portal is managed by GeM SPV, a 100% government-owned company, and is the national public procurement portal. It replaced the old Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) system.

As of 2025, GeM has facilitated massive procurement, surpassing ₹5 lakh crore in gross merchandise value (GMV) in FY 2024-25 alone, with over 1.6 lakh government buyers and millions of sellers.

The platform covers over 10,000 product categories (like office supplies, vehicles, or medical equipment) and 330+ services (like consulting or transportation), with 97% of transactions fee-free and reduced charges for large orders.

These helped small businesses, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), women entrepreneurs, startups, artisans, and farmers' groups, to participate easily and over 10 lakh MSMEs and 1.8 lakh women-led businesses are now onboarded.

What is GeM 5.0?

GeM 5.0 is the latest upgraded version of India's Government e-Marketplace (GeM), which is an online digital platform launched by the Government of India to make public procurement easier, faster, and more transparent.

Earlier versions like GeM 4.0 focused on basics like e-bidding, reverse auctions (where sellers compete to offer the lowest price), demand aggregation (grouping similar needs to get better deals), and integrations with systems like Aadhaar and bank accounts for quick verifications.
 

GeM 5.0 was introduced in 2024 as a major upgrade to make the platform even smarter by heavily incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced tech. This version builds on previous ones by addressing growing needs for speed, accuracy, and inclusivity in a massive system that processes thousands of tenders daily.

It was part of ongoing efforts to use AI for better governance, as highlighted in government plans like the Digital Procurement Mission (2023–2026). By May 2025, on GeM's 8th anniversary, further enhancements like GeMAI (an AI-powered chatbot for user support in 10 Indian languages) were launched, showing how GeM 5.0's foundation is being expanded.

3. Automated Compliance Checks and Screening: AI scans documents and eligibility criteria instantly using Natural Language Processing (NLP) to read complex tender files. It checks for things like deadlines, qualifications, and rules compliance, reducing errors and bias in bid evaluations. This can shorten procurement timelines by up to 30%.

4. Fraud Detection and Risk Monitoring: Machine learning spots unusual patterns in bids or transactions in real-time, preventing fraud. It also tracks contract performance after awards, verifies invoices, and predicts risks.

In FY25, GeM crossed ₹5 lakh crore in gross merchandise value (GMV), showing its scale. Future projections suggest it could hit ₹10 lakh crore by 2030, with more AI and blockchain integrations.
