  1. India and ASEAN have a long-standing relationship that has grown stronger over the years. India's focus on a strengthened and multi-faceted relationship with ASEAN is an outcome of the significant changes in the world's political and economic landscape.
  2. The ASEAN-India relationship is based on the principles of mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit. Here are some key features of the ASEAN-India relationship: 
    • ​​​​​​​Strategic Partnership: India and ASEAN upgraded their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2012, which was a natural progression from their Dialogue Partner status in 1996 and Summit Level Partner status in 2002.
    • Dialogue Mechanisms: There are 30 Dialogue Mechanisms between India and ASEAN, cutting across various sectors, including political, economic, and socio-cultural.
    • Mission to ASEAN: India has set up a separate Mission to ASEAN and the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Jakarta in April 2015 with a dedicated Ambassador to strengthen engagement with ASEAN and ASEAN-centric processes.
    • Civilizational Ties: A unique aspect of the India-ASEAN relationship is the long-standing civilizational ties that both parties have enjoyed, which provide areas for both people-to-people links and economic cooperation.
    • Economic Relations: India became an ASEAN Dialogue Partner in 1996, and two-way merchandise trade between ASEAN and India reached USD 77.0 billion in 2020.
    • Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: ASEAN and India have intensified their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which aims to develop friendly relations and mutually beneficial dialogues, cooperation, and partnerships with countries and sub-regional, regional, and international organizations.
    • 30 Years of Relations: The year 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of ASEAN-India relations, signifying a significant milestone in their partnership. India initially came on board as a Sectoral Dialogue Partner in 1992, gained Dialogue Partner status three years later, and became a Strategic Partner in 2012. In 2015, India formally set up a Mission to ASEAN to deepen its engagement with the organization.
    • Cultural and Social Exchanges: The partnership has seen increased cooperation in the areas of culture and social development, with a focus on educational and media exchanges, as well as capacity building of ASEAN citizens through Indian scholarships. Both parties have also engaged in various cultural events and launched new projects, such as the ASEAN-India Network of Universities
  3. ​​​​​​​Trade and economy; maritime cooperation; cultural and social exchanges; science, technology, and innovation; transport and connectivity; micro, small, and medium enterprises; and digital economy are some of the key areas of cooperation between AESAN and India.
  4. The ASEAN-India relationship is a key pillar of India's foreign policy and the foundation of its Act East Policy. The relationship is based on shared values, mutual interests, and a common vision for the region's peace, stability, and prosperity
