The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023, published on January 17, titled "Beyond Basics," focuses on 14-18-year-olds in rural India, examining their enrollment patterns, learning levels, and aspirations.
The report is facilitated by the Pratham Education Foundation and covers four important aspects: educational and career pathways, the ability to apply foundational skills to daily life situations, digital access and skills, and aspirations for the future.
Key findings from the ASER 2023 report include:
The survey found that of all children surveyed in the 14-18 age group, 53 percent were enrolled in school (Class 10 or below), 28 percent were in Class 11 or 12, 7 percent were enrolled in college, and 13 percent were not enrolled anywhere. At age 18, the enrolment level dropped significantly, with 33.4 percent of female children and 31.6 percent of male children not enrolled anywhere.
Enrollment patterns: The report found that more than half of 14-18-year-olds in rural India struggle with division (3-digit by 1-digit) problems, a skill usually expected among children of Class III or IV.
Learning levels: About 25% of 14-18-year-olds still cannot read a Class II level text fluently in their regional language.
Digital access and skills: The report revealed that only 9% of surveyed young people had a computer, and 85% of those who had one could use it. For smartphones, 89% had access to one at home, and 92% could use one.
Aspirations: The report also explored the aspirations of rural youth, focusing on their educational and career pathways.
The ASER 2023 survey was conducted in 28 districts across 26 states, reaching over 34,000 youth in the age group of 14-18 years. The report aims to provide evidence on enrollment patterns, learning levels, and aspirations of this age group, as well as their digital access and skills
