India, the world’s second-largest rice producer after China and the largest exporting nation commands more than 40% share in the global trade of non-basmati white rice.
Recently, the government has approved the exports of 1.34 million tonnes of non-basmati white rice to seven countries from Asia and Africa including the Philippines, Malaysia, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Nepal through National Cooperative Export Limited.
On July 20, the government banned the shipment of white rice to boost domestic supplies. However, these exports are allowed to meet the food security needs of developing countries through a government-to-government route.
India, being the largest exporter and the second largest producer of rice, benefits from the increasing rice consumption around the world. In FY2022, India exported non-basmati rice worth USD 6.1 billion, which is 27% higher than the previous year.
