Ask Anything, Know Better

  • The BharOS is an operating system used in mobile phones. It was developed by JandK Operations Pvt Ltd. IIT Madras was the pioneer in developing and IIT Madras developed it through its JandK organization.
  • Basically, JandK is a non-profit organization. The IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies launched this private organization along with others. It is funded by the Science and Technology Department of the Government of India.
  • Main objective -  The main objective of BharOS operating system is security. The OS is unique as it allows only safe and trusted applications to be installed on the OS. BharOS screens the applications before installation begins. If the app is not safe, then the OS does not provide access.
  • Features -  There are No Default Apps in the OS. Default apps are those applications that come with the OS. The user cannot uninstall it. For instance, Gmaps, Gmail, and other Google applications are the default apps of Android OS. One cannot uninstall them if they are not using them. The drawback of default apps is memory consumption. If the user is not using these apps, they drain out user data, memory and power.
  • It provides strict security features and therefore is apt for 5G networks. Users willing to use cloud services will be benefited the most from the app.
  • BharOS users get free access to PASS. PASS means Private App Store Service. It has a list of curated apps, meaning the apps in PASS are of high standard and security. They are already screened for malware, hacking issues, password protection and other security features.
  • It is an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) based operating system. Put simply, AOSP is an open source operating system development project maintained by Google. But AOSP is not actually Android. It's missing critical components like the Google Play Store, Google Play Services, and most Google applications.
  • BharOS offers 'Native Over The Air' (NOTA) updates that can help to keep the devices secure. These updates are automatically downloaded and installed on the device, ensuring that the device is always running the latest version of the operating system, including the latest security patches and bug fixes.
  • BharOS has currently partnered with third party apps like Duck Duck Go and Signal as default browsers and messaging apps.
  •  Current status -  BharOS operating system is currently being given to organisations that require confidential communications on restricted apps on mobiles. These users require access to private cloud services through private 5G networks.
  • The developers of BharOS plan to collaborate with private industry, government agencies, strategic agencies and telecom service providers to increase the usage and adoption of BharOS in the country.
