  1. The Department for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is a nodal government agency with a responsibility to formulate and implement growth strategies for the industrial sector, along with other socio-economic objectives and national priorities.
  2. It was previously known as the Department for Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP). The idea behind relabelling the DIPP is to include internal trade in its ambit.
  3. It is a division of the central government that operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
  4. It formulates and carries out the government’s industrial policy in India, creating and putting into action the plans required for growing industries in accordance with global and national goals. 
  5. It monitors the performance of industries that have been allocated to it expressly, as well as providing guidance on all industrial and technical issues.
  6. The formulation, advancement, and facilitation of foreign direct investment policies also come under this department. It fosters enterprise-wide collaboration and develops foreign technology policy guidelines.
  7. Drafting laws concerning intellectual property rights is also one of the functions of DPIIT. It covers industrial design, patents and trademarks, and geographical indicators of goods.
  8. DPIIT runs many programs and schemes to encourage the development of isolated areas and underdeveloped areas like northeastern regions industrially including international cooperations for industrial collaborations.
