  1. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) is a body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Government of India.
  2. It is the chief body that administers laws related to foreign trade and foreign investment in India. It implements the foreign trade policy or the EXIM (export-import) policy of the government.
  3. Till 1991, this office was known as Chief Controller of Imports and Exports (CCI&E). Post-liberalization in 1991, DGFT was formed to replace CCI&E and the role of this office changed from Prohibiter and ‘Controller’ of Exports and Imports to ‘Facilitator’, Promoter, and Regulator of Exports and Imports.
  4. It is headquartered in New Delhi with 38 regional offices all over the country.
  5. DGFT works in tandem with other similar organizations such as the Customs Commissionerate, the DRI authorities, the Central Excise authorities, and the Enforcement Directorate.
  6. The DGFT is the licensing authority for export/import businesses in India. It offers facilitation to exporters in connection with developments in international trade, such as WTO agreements, rule of origin and anti-dumping issues, etc. to aid them in their export and import decisions in an international dynamic environment.
  7. It grants the Exporter Importer Code (EIC) Number to exporters and importers in India, which is a 10-digit number that is needed for people to export or/and import.
  8. It plays a key role in regulating and permitting the transit of goods from India to adjacent countries, according to the bilateral trade agreements. It also grants permission for free export wherever necessary.
  9. It plays a vital role in controlling DEPB rates which stands for Duty Entitlement Pass Book. DEPB scheme is an export incentive scheme of the government of India, given to exporters.
  10. It acts as a complaint redressal mechanism for foreign buyers about the quality of Indian export products.
  11. It formulates or adds new codes to the ITC-HS Codes also known as the Indian trade Clarification based on Harmonised System of Coding. These are the codes given to import/export products.
