What is Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC)?

  1. Employees’ State Insurance Corporation, abbreviated as ESIC, is one of the two main statutory social security bodies under the ownership of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India.
  2. This corporation is managed under the rules and regulations stipulated in the Employment State Insurance (ESI) Act of 1948. 
  3. It is a comprehensive social system that offers socio-economic protection to workers and their immediate dependents covered under the ESI scheme. Holistic support is provided to the workers, addressing their healthcare needs and providing financial security during challenging times.
  4. It is a government organization that manages the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme which provides medical and financial assistance to employees and their families. The assistance is provided when an employee is unable to perform his/her duties due to sickness, disablement, and death due to employment injury, or maternity.
  5. This scheme is applicable to any entity that employs 10 or more people, such as shops, hotels, and restaurants, that is not engaged in manufacturing, cinemas, road motor transport establishments, newspaper establishments, private educational and medical institutions.
  6. Employees with a monthly salary within Rs.21,000 are entitled to get the benefits of this scheme. Putting it together employees working for factories/establishments with 10 or more employees drawing wages of up to Rs. 21,000 per month are entitled to receive health benefits under the ESI Act.
  7. The funding of this scheme is sourced through contributions from both employers and employees. Employers contribute 4.75% of the wages payable to their employees, while employees contribute 1.75% of their wages.
  8. According to the recent payroll data, the ESIC added 20.23 lakh new subscribers in May 2023.
  9. This data of ESIC also shows that more jobs have been generated for the youth of the nation as out of a total of 20.23 lakh employees added, 9.40 lakh employees are up to the age group of 25 years which is 47% of the total employees.
  10. Moreover, it also shows the gender-wise analysis of payroll data, according to which the net enrolment of female members has been 3.96 lakh in May 2023, plus, the total of 71 transgender employees have got registered under the ESI Act Scheme in May 2023 which shows that ESIC is committed to deliver its benefit to every section of the society.
