Gender Development Index (GDI)

29 Jul 2023 Zinkpot 535
  1. The Gender Development Index (GDI) is a method for examining gender equality globally. It gives the Human Development Index a gender-sensitive dimension.
  2. It addresses disparities in life expectancy, education, and wealth between men and women.
  3. The GDI accounts for differences between men and women in three basic dimensions of human development - health, knowledge, and living standards using the same component indicators as the HDI i.e. life expectancy, adult literacy, school enrolment, and per capita income.
  4. The GDI can’t be utilized without the HDI score. Hence, it can’t be used as a standalone indication of gender disparity.
  5. The GDI indicates how much women lag behind their male counterparts in each dimension of human development, and how far they need to catch up.
  6. It is also helpful in determining the true gender gap in human development accomplishments and in developing policy measures to close the gap. It can help policymakers identify areas where more work needs to be done in order to improve the lives of women and girls.
  7. Countries that rank high on the GDI tend to have less gender inequality, while the countries that rank low often have high levels of gender inequality.
  8. India has made significant progress in its ranking of the GDI index, rising from 135th in 2022 to 127th out of 146 countries in the report’s 2023 edition.
  9. India’s neighbors, Pakistan ranked at 142, Bangladesh at 59, China at 107, Nepal at 116, Sri Lanka at 115, and Bhutan at 103.
