The Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) is an international initiative established to guide the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a manner that respects human rights and the shared democratic values of its member countries.
Launched in June 2020 with fifteen founding members, GPAI is hosted by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The partnership was first proposed by Canada and France at the 2018 G7 summit.
The founding members of GPAI include countries like Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, among others.
GPAI was established to address challenges and opportunities related to AI, including ethics, safety, transparency, and accountability. It brings together governments, industry, civil society, and academia to facilitate a multi-stakeholder approach to AI policy and technology development. The initiative focuses on research and development, policy recommendations, and the sharing of best practices.
GPAI aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice by supporting research and applied research in AI.
It provides a mechanism for sharing multidisciplinary research and identifying key issues among AI practitioners, facilitating international collaboration.
Some of the key areas of focus by GPAI include:
AI, Labor, and the Economy: Addressing the impact of AI on employment, wealth distribution, and economic decision-making.
AI and Media Integrity: Developing best practices for AI to have a positive impact on the global information ecosystem.
Fairness, Transparency, and Accountability: Ensuring AI systems are fair, transparent, and accountable.
Safety-Critical AI: Convening partners and stakeholders to develop best practices for preventing accidents, misuses, and unintended consequences of AI technologies.
GPAI has recently adopted the New Delhi Declaration, which outlines a collaborative effort to advance AI applications with a notable emphasis on addressing the needs of the Global South.
The declaration highlights the commitment of GPAI member nations to foster innovation and ensure that AI benefits all of humanity, leaving no one behind
