  3. What is a co-operative? A cooperative is often a voluntary association of individuals who come together with the intention to work together and promote their economic interests. These societies work on the principle of self-help as well as mutual help.
  4. NCCF functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Government of India. It is registered under the Multistate Cooperative Societies Act, of 2002.
  5. One of the main objectives of this organization is to provide supply support to consumer cooperatives and other distributing agencies for the distribution of consumer goods at reasonable and affordable rates.
  6. Recently, on account of a freakish rise in the price of tomatoes all over India the Centre has direct cooperatives like NCCF and NAFED to sell tomatoes at a reduced rate. Since July, both these organizations have been selling tomatoes at a discounted rate on behalf of the Consumer Affairs Ministry in Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar to boost domestic availability and contain prices.
  7. They are doing this by procuring tomatoes from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra for simultaneous disposal in major consumption centres where retail prices have recorded the maximum increase.
