National Livestock Mission (NLM) was launched in the financial year 2014-15. It seeks to ensure quantitative and qualitative improvement in livestock production systems and capacity building of all stakeholders.
It started operating in 2014 and encompasses all the Indian states. It is a centrally sponsored scheme and is run as a sub-scheme under ‘White Revolution’ since 2019.
The scheme is implemented with the following three sub-missions:
Sub-Mission on Fodder and Feed Development
Sub-Mission on Breed Development of Livestock and Poultry.
Sub-Mission on Extension and Innovation
The mission ensures quantitative and qualitative improvement in livestock production systems, especially in sheep, goat, pig, poultry, feed and fodder sector.
India is rich in livestock biodiversity and has developed many specific breeds adapted to various climatic conditions.
Besides their monetary benefits and providing a steady stream of food and revenue for households, livestock provide employment to the rural family, act as insurance during crop failure and the number of livestock owned by farmer determine the social status among the community.
That is why the regulation of Indian livestock biodiversity is crucial which is the major focus of NLM
It is operated under the Department of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying which was formerly a part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
