National Skill Development Mission (NSDM)

  1. The National Skill Development Mission (NSDM) was launched in 2015 by the Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
  2. The mission statement of NSDM was “To rapidly scale up skill development efforts in India by creating an end-to-end, outcome-focused implementation framework, which aligns demands for the employers for a well-trained skilled workforce with aspirations of Indian citizens for sustainable livelihoods”. 
  3. The mission has been developed to create convergence across sectors and states in terms of skilled training activities.
  4. It is implemented through a streamlined institutional mechanism driven by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
  5. This mission is supported by three other institutions, namely the National Skill Development Agency (NSDA), the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), and the Directorate General of Training (DGT).
  6. Functions: It implements the national skill qualification framework, which will allow opportunities for long-term and short-term training, leading to productive employment and career improvement.
  7. It aims to ensure high-quality training standards through high-quality teaching and benchmarked institutions according to national and international standards, resulting in a highly skilled workforce and global job opportunities.
  8. It supports weaker and disadvantaged sections of society through focused outreach programs and targeted skilled development activities.
  9. It provides facilities for reskilling and upskilling to the workforce of the unorganized sectors of the industry.
  10. It enables pathways for the transition between the vocational training system and the formal education system through a credit transfer system.
  11. It uses a framework to balance the industry/employer demand and the workforce, leading to a sustainable livelihood through determined training.
  12. It maintains a national database which is known as the Labour Market Information System (LMIS) which acts as a portal for matching the demand and supply of skilled workforce in the country. It will provide citizens with vital information on the skilling initiatives across the country.
  13. The LMIS will also serve as a platform for monitoring the performance of the existing skill development programs in every Indian state.
  14. The National Skill Development Mission is open to any candidate of Indian nationality who is: 
    • Jobless, a college/school dropout
    • Has a bank account and verified identification evidence (Aadhaar/Voter ID)
