 India and Artificial Intelligence (AI)

  • Being an IT powerhouse and the second largest online market in the world, India has a conducive environment for artificial intelligence to flourish. The pandemic-ushered nationwide digital wave has fed into AI adoption and awareness.
  • India brings sheer expertise and scalability of solutions to AI implementation. This is because, in India, data is as abundant as the population. This, along with digital readiness, has fuelled AI initiatives with increasing penetration - be it for scalable UPI transactions or centralised information storage in the DigiLocker.
  • Keeping the mistakes of the early adopters of AI in mind, India is learning from their mistakes and strategising with a holistic approach to AI, analytics, cloud and other technologies. India is deploying unique AI solutions that are ethical, responsive and data protected with unbiased regulatory policy and end-to-end consideration.
  • The major booster for AI in India has been the incredible government impetus in recent years. From pro-digital infrastructure and the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence India Commission to the emphasis on technology growth in the Union Budget, India has set up a favourable framework to augment AI.
  • The NITI Aayog has set up 7,500 crore INR investment towards Centres of Research, funding for startups and partnerships with hyperscalers including AWS. Campaigns like 'AI for Indian computing platforms like AIRAWAT are propelling India towards an AI revolution.
  • AI is used more in the applied sense in India; the technology is leveraged to solve real world problems with practical use cases. For instance, real time monitoring and response management in the largest gathering of the world, Kumbh Mela, is brought about with responsive AI.
  • Aided by tech giants like the Microsoft India Development Centr, Indian companies are now applying cognitive AI to create solutions for data-intensive verticals such as BFSI, healthcare, ecommerce, manufacturing, retail, etc.
  • India has positioned itself at the front and centre of AI supremacy with an increasing number of patents and the 6th position in the Global AI Vibrancy ranking. According to The Brookings Institution, India is among the top 10 countries in terms of technological advancements and funding in AI.
  • Despite all this, NASSCOM's AI Adoption Index 2022 pegs India's AI maturity at 2.5 out of 4, which means India is just beginning with AI. By connecting the dots and combining the rich talent pool with hyper innovation and consistent R&D, India can revolutionize the global AI landscape and become a trillion dollar economy.
