Israel or Palestine : Whose side India is?

31 May 2024 Zinkpot 319
Israel and Palestine are engaged in a violent war but whom does India support? Initially in 1948, India was completely with Palestine and even India voted against the United nation Resolution to divide Palestine into two parts. India was the only Non-Muslim country apart from Greece and Cuba to do so.

But with the changing times India’s stand has changed. In 2023, When Hamas group of Palestine attacked Israelis on October 7 and killed 1200 innocents, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the attacks by Hamas as “terrorist attacks”, and expressed  that India stands in solidarity with Israel. But it hasn’t so far designated Hamas as a terror group.

After Israeli army started carrying military attacks on Gaza strip which is a region of Palestine, the Indian government has called on Israel for restraint, dialogue and diplomacy and condemned the death of civilians  but has not supported a “ceasefire”.

But India sent 70 tonnes of humanitarian assistance including 16.5 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies via Egypt to Gaza.

Palestine, an arab country is important to India for cordial relations with other arab nations from where India buys crude oil but Israel is also important. India is now one of Israel’s biggest arms customers and also of advanced and sensitive defence systems and India now buys about $2 billion worth of arms every year, making up over 30 percent of Israel’s total exports of armaments.

Hence India’s stand is not one sided. India is commitment to the two-State solution which means it supports both Israel and Palestine as two states. But India condemns terrorism in all its forms where Hamas was criticised and also Israel was asked to take care of Palestinians civilians.
