Pakistan based terrorists of The Resistance Force (TRF), an unit of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) have killed 26 Indian tourists in Pahalgam of Kashmir. The Indian government has taken a strong stand against Pakistan for it’s involvement in terror attacks.
One, the cabinet committee on security has decided that India will suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, under which 39 billion cubic meters of water from the Indus River system flows from India into Pakistan annually.
Pakistan is heavily dependent on the water of river Indus, Chenab, Jhelum and others, particularly for irrigation in it’s state of Punjab. The suspension of the Indus water treaty will bring immense pressure on Pakistan. China who is a friend of Pakistan is expected to obstruct the flow of river Brahmaputra will not be able to do so because it is already engaged in a trade war with US. If it adds tensions with India too, it will suffer further. Moreover, obstruction of water of Brahmaputra will also affect Bangladesh, who is a close ally of China. So China may not take any strong stand against India.
The second decision taken by India is the Closure of Attari-Wagah Border. This land border has been a critical point for trade and people-to-people contact between India and Pakistan, has been shut down with immediate effect. Those who have crossed over with valid endorsements may return through that route before 01 May 2025.
India has further imposed a ban on Pakistani Nationals Entering India. The entry of Pakistani citizens into India has been suspended indefinitely. This includes both visa services and cross-border travel permits. Pakistani nationals will not be permitted to travel to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) visas. Any SVES visas issued in the past to Pakistani nationals are deemed cancelled. Any Pakistani national currently in India under SVES visa has 48 hours to leave India.
Further, all military advisors posted at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi have been expelled, signalling a downgrade in military-to-military diplomatic engagement. They have a week to leave India. India will be withdrawing its own Defence/Navy/Air Advisors from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
India has asked Pakistan to reduce its diplomatic presence in New Delhi to a limited staff of 30, effectively slashing the mission's current operating capacity of 55. They have one week to do so.
India had enough. It shall not allow the simultaneous flow of blood and water together.
