One District, One Product (ODOP)

01 Apr 2023 Zinkpot 185
  1. The ‘One District, One Product’ (ODOP) was launched by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, to help districts reach their full potential, foster economic and socio-cultural growth and create employment opportunities, especially in rural areas.
  2. It aims to do this by identifying, promoting, and branding a product from one district. To illustrate, Soft Toys of Jhansi, UP; Handicrafts of Gorakhpur, UP; famous wooden toys from the Budhni region of Sehore District, MP; stones from Siddhi MP; were selected as an ODOP product.
  3. The ODOP scheme aims to turn every district in India into an export hub through promotion of the product in which the district specialises. The initiative plans to accomplish this by scaling manufacturing, supporting local businesses, finding potential foreign customers and so on, thus helping to achieve the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision.
  4. The Uttar Pradesh government launched ODOP scheme on January 24th, 2018 and due to its success, it was later adopted by the Central Government.
  5. This initiative is carried out with the ‘Districts as Export Hubs’ (DEH) initiative by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Department of Commerce. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade is an important stakeholder.
  6. The ODOP is raising awareness of the importance of GI. Additionally, this initiative is trying to raise awareness of ODOP products as well as their benefits of buying them in domestic and international markets. Thus, this scheme offers opportunity to strengthen local products having health, environmental or other benefits
  7. Approximately, 761 districts of 36 States/UTs have availed of the ODOP scheme with the identification of 1068 products.
