17 Apr 2023 Zinkpot 395
  1. Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) is a traditional farming improvement programme which was launched in 2015 and is an extended component of Soil Health Management (SHM) under the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA).
  2. With the help of PKVY, the government aims to support and promote:
    • Organic farming
    • Reduction in dependence on fertiliser and agricultural chemicals
    • Improvement of the soil health while increasing the yields
    • Organic food, thus produced will be linked with modern marketing tools and local markets.
  3. The revamped PMKVY promotes organic farming through the adoption of an organic village by cluster approach and the Participatory Guarantee System of certification.
  4. The target of the scheme was to operate in 10,000 clusters of 20 hectares or 50 acres of land each and yield around 2,00,000 hectares of agricultural area under organic farming.
  5. According to the scheme, cash incentives would be given to Indian farmers to encourage them to switch from conventional to traditional farming practises. The government is providing financial support for this conversion.
  6. Objective: The primary objective of this scheme is to encourage integrated, climate-resilient, natural resource-based farming methods that maintain and improve soil fertility, protect natural resources, recycle nutrients on site, and reduce farmers’ reliance on outside inputs.
  7. Implementation: This scheme is being implemented by the Organic Farming cell of the Integrated Nutrient Management (Division) of the Department of Agriculture; Cooperation and Farmers Welfare.
  8. At the State level, the State Department of Agriculture and Cooperation has been implementing the scheme with the involvement of Regional Councils that are registered under the PGS-India Certification Programme.
  9. The government is likely to announce a substantial increase in the financial assistance provided for promotion of traditional indigenous practices, which do not recommend use of chemical fertilizers under this scheme.
