Quality Council of India (QCI)

  1. The Quality Council of India (QCI) is a government-backed autonomous body in India that operates with the primary objective of promoting and implementing quality standards across various sectors. 
  2. QCI functions through the governing body and other executive bodies (boards/committees) for implementing the strategy, policy, and operational guidelines as set out by its governing council. 
  3. The QCI is involved in various sectors, including healthcare, environment protection, governance, social sectors, infrastructure sector, and other areas of organized activities that have a significant bearing.
  4. QCI performs several functions to fulfill its mandate. The key functions of the Quality Council of India (QCI) include:
    • ​​​​​​​Promoting Quality Competitiveness: QCI aims to promote the quality competitiveness of India's enterprises, especially MSMEs, through the adoption and adherence to quality management standards and quality tools.
    • National Quality Campaign: QCI leads a nationwide quality movement aimed at empowering people to demand quality in all spheres of activities.
    • Publication and Dissemination of Information: QCI publishes books, literature, and periodicals related to its objectives and disseminates information to promote quality awareness.
    • Organizing Events: QCI organizes or participates in trade fairs, exhibitions, seminars, and other events at the national and international level to promote quality.
    • Capacity Building: QCI builds capacities by developing appropriate quality accreditation mechanisms for various sectors, such as oil and gas, forestry, agriculture, animal husbandry, warehouse, pharmacy, and others.
    • Bi-lateral/Multi-lateral Recognition Arrangements: QCI encourages the development and application of third-party assessment models for use in government, regulators, organizations, and society.
    • ZED Model Certification: QCI is responsible for the certification and assessment of MSMEs and other manufacturers under the ZED (Zero Defect, Zero Effect) model.
    • Accreditation Boards and Quality Promotion Boards: QCI has various accreditation bodies under it to attest to the performances of different sectors of the Indian economy, such as healthcare, industries, professionals, etc.
  5. These functions help QCI play a pivotal role in propagating, adopting, and adhering to quality standards in various important spheres of activities, including healthcare, environment protection, governance, social sectors, infrastructure sector, and other organized activities that have a significant bearing.
  6. Recently, the Quality Council of India (QCI) and Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) signed an initial pact to enhance the quality of the latter's products, train artisans and introduce the 'Made in India' label for khadi.
