  1. UMANG stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-Age Governance. It is also known as Unified Mobile Application, an all-in-one app.
  2. It is an all in one single, unified, secure, multi-channel, multi-platform, multi-lingual, multi- service mobile app powered by a robust back-end platform providing access to high impact services of various organisations.
  3. Umang app that can be used to access a variety of pan-India e-government services, including income tax filing, Aadhaar and provident fund queries, gas cylinder booking Passport Seva, etc.
  4. It is a key component of the Digital India initiative of the government that intends to make all traditional offline government services available 24*7 online through a single unified app.
  5. It aims to bring 162 government services on a single mobile app, with a larger goal to make the government accessible on the mobile phone for the citizens.
  6. This app provides access to over 1200 services of various government organisations in states and at the Centre as well as utility payments. It supports 13 Indian languages and caters to on-demand scalability.
  7. This app was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The bodies behind its development are the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology – MietY, and one that will drive mobile governance in India is the National e-Governance Division - NeGD.
  8. The services of the app are made available on multiple channels like web and mobile application, IVR and SMS that can easily be accessed through feature phones, smartphones, desktops, laptops and tablets. It provides seamless integration with popular customer-centric services like Digilocker, Aadhaar and more.
  9. Objectives
    • To act as an enabler and facilitator in developing overall mobile based service delivery ecosystem in India.
    • Provide easy access for individuals to various services via single Mobile Application, easy to remember short code and single Toll Free number.
    • Provide easy discoverability of services, easy manageability and standardisation of service delivery.
    • Provide for quick mobile enablement of e-Gov applications/services of Government departments through easy and fast integration, on-boarding, mobile front-end roll-out by bringing their services on this mobile application platform.
  10. As of October 2022, 47.5 million users had registered on the Umang platform in India.
