What is Green Energy Corridor (GEC)?

  1. Green Energy Corridor (GEC) is an intra-/inter-state transmission system being implemented by respective State Transmission Utilities for intra state (Within a state) and Inter-state Transmission (between the states) System is being implemented by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd.
  2. It was launched by the Government of India in 2015-16 in order to build a balance between the total electricity produced from renewable sources like solar, wind, tidal and hydro sources, and the conventional national grid in India.
  3. It was launched to be implemented in two phases – Phase 1 and Phase 2.
  4. Green Energy Corridor - Phase 1: Phase 1 is already being implemented by eight renewable rich states in India - Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
  5. It is working for the grid integration and power evacuation of about 24GW of renewable energy.
  6. The 1st phase which started in 2015-16 was supposed to be completed by December 2020 but due to delays arising from Covid Pandemic, the deadline of the project was shifted to their end of 2022.
  7. Green Energy Corridor - Phase 2: This phase is working towards the grid integration and power evacuation of approximately 20GW of Renewable Energy power projects in seven states, namely Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
  8. The transmission systems will be created over a period of five years from FY 2021-22 to 2025-26.
  9. It is targeted to be set up with a total estimated cost of Rs. 12,031 crores, and the Central Finance Assistance will be 33% of the project cost.
  10. The Intra-State GEC Phase-II was approved by CCEA in January 2022. The total target is 10,750-kilometre intra-state transmission lines and 27500 MVA sub-stations with scheduled commissioning timeline of March 2026
  11. Implementation of GEC will reduce the carbon footprint, which will, in turn, promote sustainable growth and will also contribute to the long-term energy security of India.
  12. Direct and indirect employment opportunities will be generated for both the skilled and unskilled personnel by the implementation of GEC.
