The Mudh-Nyoma Airbase is a new and significant military facility in India, built in the high mountains of eastern Ladakh near the China border. The History of the Airbase

1. The story of Mudh-Nyoma starts back in 1962. That year, India and China had a war, and the airstrip was built around that time. But after the war, it was not used for many years and became old and unused.
2. In September 2009, the Indian Air Force brought it back to life. They landed an AN-32 transport plane there for the first time in decades. It was just a simple mud-paved landing ground then, not a full airbase.
3. Things changed in 2020 when there was a big standoff between Indian and Chinese troops along the border. This made India decide to upgrade many places, including Nyoma. During that time, planes like C-130J and helicopters like Apache and Chinook were used from the site.

How Was It Built and What’s New?

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) built the airbase. A team of women officers led the project, which cost about Rs 218 crore (around $26 million). Work started in 2023, and the concrete runway was finished last year. The rest of the buildings were done by October 2024. They built it fast, in just seven months for the main work, even with tough conditions like high winds and cold.

On November 12, 2025, the airbase was officially opened. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, landed a C-130J plane there to mark the start. He was with another top officer, Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra. The BRO chief called it one of the most important projects in Ladakh.

What Does the Airbase Have?

1. The Mudh-Nyoma Airbase is now a fully developed airbase, not just a basic landing strip. It has a long runway of about 2.7 to 3 kilometers, which is strong enough for large aircraft.
2. The base includes hangars to protect planes, an air traffic control tower, and hard parking areas for different aircraft. It can handle fighter jets like the Sukhoi-30MKI, helicopters, and big transport aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster III and C-130J, which means the base can support combat missions, move soldiers quickly, and deliver supplies fast.
3. Nyoma is easier to operate than many other high-altitude bases because it lies in a flatter valley compared to Leh and is much closer to the border. India also has other high-altitude airstrips like Daulat Beg Oldi at 16,700 feet, but that one is mainly used as a landing ground, whereas Nyoma is a full, modern airbase.

Why Is It Important?

1. Close to China Border: Since the airbase is very near the LAC, India can respond quickly if any issue or tension occurs. Troops and weapons can be moved fast.
