VAIBHAV Fellowship

  1. The VAIBHAV Fellowship is a program of the Government of India, aimed at improving the research ecosystem of India’s Higher Educational and Scientific Institutions by facilitating academic and research collaborations between Indian Institutions and the best institutions in the world through the mobility of faculty/researchers from overseas institutions to India. 
  2. It is a program that aims to connect Indian scientists of the diaspora with Indian higher educational institutions, universities, and public-funded scientific institutions. 
  3. The VAIBHAV Fellowship offers several benefits to the fellows, host institutions, and Indian students. Some of the key benefits include:
    • Financial Support: Each selected Vaibhav fellow receives a stipend of INR 4 lac (USD 5000) per month, along with accommodation during their stay.
    • Collaboration: Fellows commit to spending a month or two annually in India for a maximum of three years, collaborating with host Indian institutions.
    • Knowledge Sharing: Fellows are expected to share their knowledge regarding the best practices in research and translation of research, incubation, etc., with the host institutions.
    • Long-term Connections: Fellows are encouraged to build enduring research connections with host institutions, collaborate with faculty, and bring fresh ideas to the field, contributing to Indian universities and research settings.
    • Connecting Indian Students: Fellows are expected to connect Indian students to the foreign research environment, fostering innovation and future research.
    • Research Grant: The host institutions receive a research grant to support collaborative projects and host the fellows.
    • Identified Knowledge Verticals: The selected fellows are invited to work in 18 identified knowledge verticals, including quantum technology, health, pharma, electronics, agriculture, energy, computer sciences, and material sciences.
    • Travel Allowance: The fellowship covers international and domestic travel expenses, including business class travel from the parent institute to the place of work in India.
    • Accommodation: The fellowship includes accommodation for the fellows, with a daily lodging allowance of up to Rs.7,500.
    • Contingency: The fellowship also covers contingency expenses, with an expenditure reserve of Rs 1,000,000 per year for research in India.

Overall, the VAIBHAV Fellowship aims to foster collaboration between Indian Diaspora scientists and Indian higher educational institutions, universities, and public-funded scientific institutions, contributing to research excellence and innovation in India.The VAIBHAV Fellowship is implemented by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, through the Department of Science and Technology (DST). 
  5. The fellowship is open to Non-Resident Indians (NRI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).
  6. The applicants are required to submit a research proposal highlighting the objectives of the research work to be undertaken and identify an Indian Institution/University/Research Laboratory for carrying out their research.
  7. The call for applications is usually made twice a year, with deadlines on 31st July and 31st January.
  8. Overall, the VAIBHAV Fellowship aims to foster collaboration between Indian Diaspora scientists and Indian higher educational institutions, universities, and public-funded scientific institutions, contributing to research excellence and innovation in India.
  9. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) recently unveiled the first cohort of fellows under the Vaishvik Bhartiya Vaigyanik (VAIBHAV) scheme, a strategic initiative aimed at fostering short-term collaborations with Indian-origin scientists based abroad.
