What are unlisted shares?

17 Jul 2023 Zinkpot 170
  1. Unlisted shares are those shares that are not listed or traded on any recognized stock exchange. These shares are not available for public trading and are generally held by a limited number of individuals or entities, such as promoters, founders, venture capitalists, or strategic investors.
  2. These types of shares are not present on stock exchanges like the National Stock Exchange or the Bombay Stock Exchange. They are not traded through regular trading mechanisms for listed shares.
  3. These shares are basically triggered over-the-counter and they are often referred to as OTC securities which means that they’re mainly traded via brokers or dealers.
  4. They are often issued through private placements where the companies offer shares to specific individuals.
  5. Unlisted shares in developing or early-stage companies may offer great financial rewards. These companies may be in the early stages of growth, but if they are successful, their valuations could rise significantly.
  6. Buying unlisted shares gives the opportunity to buy at an early stage when valuations are often lower than those of later-stage investments or public offerings.
  7. Including unlisted shares in the investment portfolio might aid in risk diversification. Unlisted shares have different risk profiles and growth trends as compared to listed stocks. By diversifying investments between listing and unlisted assets, one can lower the total risk of their portfolio.
  8. Determining the value of unlisted shares can be challenging since there is no readily available market price to monitor.
  9. Unlisted shares may offer higher growth potential than listed stocks, but can be more volatile and less regulated.
  10. Unlisted shares are typically prone to have lower liquidity than their listed counterparts. The absence of a public market restricts the ease of buying and selling these shares.
  11. These shares lack transparency because of not being traded on regular stock exchanges like other listed shares.
